College Planning: How to Set Up For Academic Success
By Mimi Rothschild

Home school can be difficult to master for both parents and students. Home school requires a level of discipline, but there are ways that you can help improve your home school child's academic success by just implementing a few, easy ideas.

Realtors say it the most—location, location, location. The location that you have set up for home school is one of the most important factors in achieving academic success. You cannot set up your home school classroom in the living room with the television on. Establish a space that is free of distractions and clutter with plenty of work space.

When you home school, your students have to work every day. Establish set times for work, play and breaks. Do not stray from your schedule unless extenuating circumstances intervene. By establishing a routine for each day, you will find greater means for academic success in home school. Your children will know what is expected of them each day and they will, in turn, be better home school students.

When in doubt, seek out help. There are many avenues to help you help your child in home school. No matter what grades your child is getting at home school, it is important to remember to add variety and seek out interesting ways of learning to help improve your child's success. This will help your child remember key information. Find new, fun and interesting ways to have your home school child retain information. Be creative and the information will flow quickly back when they need it at test time.

Get your child to write down what they are learning. Have them take good notes and be responsible and prepared for each day's routine. Set daily, weekly and monthly goals. Have your student write them down in a day timer or calendar to help them remember where they need to be with their home school work.

Make time to re-energize with your home school student. It is important to make sure that your child has adequate time to eat, sleep and get exercise. No one can sit at a desk all day and be expected to learn well. Give your home school student a healthy, well balanced diet to help them learn better. Ensure that your child is getting adequate sleep at night to have them fresh and ready to learn the next day. Exercise is also equally important, so ensure an exercise routine is a part of your schedule.
