College Planning: Study Techniques for the Home Schooled Student
By Mimi Rothschild

Every student has a particular way of learning and studying that appeals to them, and the home schooled child is no different. There are different ways to learn and study that are beneficial for some home schooled children and not others, so learning what study methods are most appropriate for your home schooler is the key to your child's success. There is no one correct way for the home schooling student to effectively study—conversely, there is a good way for your home schooler to master their studies and some techniques may work better than others.

Some home schooled children get more from their studies when they read and reread their texts. Home schooled children that effectively learn material from reading are referred to a visual learners, as they comprehend texts with relative ease and remember fact and figures through reading. Not to worry, if your home schooler is not picking up on texts through reading and rereading, there are other techniques you can teach your child so that they may master their lessons.

Some home schooling parents read aloud with their children. This encourages auditory learners to master the material being studied. Some home schooled students achieve better comprehension when they hear the material instead of reading the material, so reading with the home schooled child is always encouraged. Similarly, you can incorporate both visual and auditory learning styles into the study time of your home schooler—you can have the home schooling child read the text and perhaps watch a video that pertains to the material to enhance the home schooled student's understanding of the material.

Would you believe that some home schooled students effectively study while in motion? That's right; some home schooled students benefit from hands on activities and will master material by taking extensive notes, playing games pertaining to the material and the like. Through the use of fun activities and projects, the home schooled student can easily master and remember the material covered.

Clearly, in considering all the styles that a student uses to learn, it may be best if a parent who is in charge of their child's home schooling incorporate a little bit of every style into the home schooler's learning. By using visual enhancers, auditory stimulators and hands-on activities, the home schooling parent will ensure that the home schooled child is exposed to as many learning techniques as possible. Thus, when one technique fails to teach the child the material, another technique will help the home schooled child master their studies and learning.
