Getting Started: The Ideal Education - Homeschooling Your Teenager
By Mimi Rothschild
Homeschooling your teen and using Internet resources to homeschool your teenage child can provide your teen with the very best education available. Not only will parents gain full control of their homeschooled teen's education, but they will be able to ensure that they are a significant part of their teen's life. Moreover, in the homeschool setting, teens are not forced to succumb to peer-pressure and can therefore put their attention and focus on the important issue: getting a solid education. Finally, by homeschooling your teen you can ensure that they are engaging in wholesome activities when they are not in the homeschooling classroom.
In contrast, online learning in the homeschooled environment should not be the only activity that the teen engages in. Parents will find that homeschooled teens do far better with their studies if they are given a good deal of free time where they can just be happy being themselves and doing what they like to do. Homeschooled teens, like every other child educated in the public school system, need to make friends so that they can learn to function in society and how to interact with others appropriately. This is where a time management system can help the homeschooler. With a time management system, parents homeschooling their teen can ensure that the homeschooled child gets a balance between homeschooling and extracurricular activities.
Time away from the homeschool setting is important. It will give the homeschooler an opportunity to refresh themselves before they undertake further study. Participation in healthy activities can prove to be vital to the homeschooled child. Becoming the member of a sports team, a volunteer group, or some other extracurricular endeavor can help homeschooled teens get the balance between work and play that they so desperately require. Ask your teen what they might be interested in doing and support their decisions if and when they are good decisions. It's important to remember that homeschooling is not about taking away experiences from the teen. It is about supplying them with as many wholesome experiences as they can possibly be exposed to.
Homeschooling your teen may not be an easy endeavor, but the outcome is more than worth all of the effort you must put forth. By homeschooling your teen and ensuring that they get both a solid education and the socialization skills they require, you are ensuring that they will live an abundant, productive and happy life as an adult.
