College Planning: Time Management - The Key to Home schooling Success
By Mimi Rothschild

In order for the home schooled student to get the best education possible, it is imperative that parents help their child implement a time management program. Not only will all efforts in time management help your home schooled child get more out of their home schooling, but it will also teach them invaluable organizational skills that they will be able to utilize in various endeavors throughout their lives. So, how does a home schooling parent go about helping their child establish an effective time management schedule?

First, in order to create a schedule for the home schooled child, a good calendar will be needed. Along with a calendar, the home schooled child will require a pencil, not a pen, to write in all appointments. Why is a pencil recommended? Well for one thing, when one is first creating a time management schedule (not just home schooled students), it is often necessary to change certain aspects of the schedule. Writing things in pencil when creating a schedule for your home schooled student will make implementing such changes easier. Second, once the skills for creating a time management schedule are mastered by the home schooler, then the more important, unchangeable appointments can be written in ink, like study time.

Before you and your home schooler begin writing appointments, help your child make a list of their priorities. Of course, all home schooling endeavors should be on the top of the list, followed by studies. If the home schooler is old enough, pencil in work. After listing such priorities, you child can then focus on recreational activities. Once a list of priorities has been established, an effective time management schedule can be created for the home schooling student.

Several copies of the time management plan should be made and this is where a computer can really prove to be beneficial for the home schooled student. When home schooling, the computer is not only a way to access educational information from various online resources, but it is also a way for the student to remain organized. If the home schooler uses the computer to create a time management plan, and there are software programs that help students do so, they can then print out their schedule accordingly. Thus, the computer can serve many purposes for the home schooling student.

Ultimately, your home schooled child can only benefit from learning time management skills. With appropriate time management, studies become more proficient and the student will learn to be organized. Finally, such organizational skills will last throughout your home schooled child's lifetime.
