Government Homeschools: Are they good for homeschoolers?

Government “Homeschool” Programs Will Change Homeschooling

This video is a homeschool mom expressing her opinion about how she belives government homeschooling will negatively impact homeschooling as a movement. I believe that she makes some excellent points that need to be strongly considered. She points out that the “freebies” are enticing and oftentimes we forget there nothing is actually free. When we take the free handouts from the government cyber schools, we are paying a higher cost than we realize. She points out that users of the K12 curriculum who recieve computers from the state are not allowed to use that computer for any religious reasons. For many Christian homeschoolers, this is the “start of a downward spiral in terms of loss of parental control.”

What do you think of government homeschooling programs?

  1. They have also shown that those students enrolled in these k12 programs actually score lower than their public school counterparts. This is nothing but public school at home.
The public schools love this. They can have the students counted in their rolls and get money for students not even present and they can use this as “proof” that homeschooling does not work.

  2. How would they know if you were using the computer for religious purposes?

I agree we should be cautious about using K12 charter programs through state funded schools, but the individuals I’ve talked to have had very different experiences with this situation, depending on what state they live in. I know a handful of people who love the program and report very little involvement or oversight of the school district they’re enrolled with. The school is concerned about progress and completion, but hasn’t been at all intrusive. Others I’ve met online have had horrible experiences and have pulled their kids from the charter programs to use more traditional homeschooling methods.
